I saw another short explanation that it’s a hero’s journey story where the hero refused the call to action. And the story ends. I sobbed so hard at the end.

Owens dad guards the TV for most of the movie. He is the gatekeeper to what he deems the "girls tv show" he sees his son obsessing over. In my opinion, he embodies the masculine that Owen is now not only trapped within, but underneath due to his father's overbearing presence when it comes to control over the TV. This is a pretty common theme in most houses growing up, fathers will usually have monopoly over the television at night, MM capitalises on this by having Owens parents extend his bedtime way past a reasonable age. Continuing to gatekeep his access, so it's only possible when he is around Maddie/Tara. He is also the one to drag Owen out of the TV and force him under the shower as he is throwing up the luna juice (imo, the rejection of indoctrination finally coming to the surface) Owen also takes his father's place on the sofa, having fully successfully repressed his real identity, and even moving in a new television on which he sees his said repressed identity mirrored back at him as an embarrassing phase. I also see MM as a representation of cisheteronormative society and systems that aim to suppress and destroy anyone outside of the cishetero norm. MM's final plan is to bury them, something you'll find a lot of transphobes and evangelist's clamining that you can pray or bury these "feelings" away until you are "normal". The reality is, if you follow that logic you're just trapping yourself into a personal hell for the convenience of those around you. (Also calls to mind Owen apologising to everyone around him at the ending despite everyone ignoring him) Gender dysphoria is suffocating, hence Owens asthma and Maddie burying herself alive in a coffin. I even think the "luna juice" could be compared to how society and certain religions will try to use indoctrination in order to suppress anyone they deem outside the norm, before ultimately finishing the job with the burial.

I feel like this film can even be a theme for just anyone who feels like they’re not living a life that they enjoy but do it for the comfort of others. It’s an important message to showcase on being one’s true self despite societal pressures or stigmas

I think you misread Tara/Maddy returning. the film doesnt condemn them from trying to get Owen to go in the ground. when Owen rejects them, they dont force it, they leave, but they leave a message for Owen, "There is still time" so he can move forward eventually. but he does have to move forward or he will die

I feel like people who think the ending is sad are missing something: there IS still time. And there are pages floating around in an earlier scene that mention that the final season of the Pink Opaque wasn't actually the final season -- there's another season. The show isn't actually over yet. The future hasn't been cancelled. And now that he's seen, without a doubt, what's inside, he can start the journey to acceptance. To the next season.

Part of the “burying” metaphor is so profound to me because it only works if you’re willing to reframe your perspective. The “normative” idea is that they’re doing something crazy and dangerous, but the reality is that they’re saving themselves by digging themselves up

Generally a pretty solid read. As a trans person, there are a few nuances that might be worth investigating. First, I don’t really love people reading the film as sad (in the comments). At least, I don’t think they should feel necessarily “sad” for the main protagonist, but rather for those living in an unexamined world. It’s not just that this is a trans allegory. It’s a critique of unimagined, unexamined lives becoming the status quo of our society. While being trans in this world is a challenge and full of emotional landmines, even arriving at a whisper or a hum that there is more to our existence than what’s been provided is actually a kind of optimism and brightness that many people are never allowed. Which is why the message of “there’s still time” feels optimistic to me. It doesn’t matter when or how long it takes you to come to water, just that you do. And many never do, not just trans people. Maybe I’ll do a video response for the rest of my critique of your video, but generally, I love the labor of you moving through this work. Lovely to see.💕

This was the first (and only) movie I’ve ever seen that felt like it was for ME. I sobbed for an hour after watching it. This movie is precisely why diverse creators are so important. I personally know people who started transitioning because of this movie. It’s saved lives for real
