We are snowbirds here in Florida with our residence in New Jersey. We own our home here in Florida, but I tell all my friends if you just wanna be a snowbird my recommendation is rent versus buying. To run our 1600 square-foot home here in Florida luckily with no mortgage the costs are now over $18,000 per year. This includes taxes, homeowners insurance, water, garbage, amenity fee, lawn maintenance, lawn, cutting, termite bond, Wi-Fi and maintenance for mechanical items. This does not include any potential Capital improvements like a roof, new HVAC system and the list goes on. For over 18,000 a year you can rent for two or three months and walk away from it and have no worries.

For last 5 years we tried RV, Airbnb, renting 1-6 months in SW FL in winter. We wanted flexibility & to travel US, Europe. Just bought a condo. Never thought we would. Reason, only 20 years left 😳😁. We can still travel. HIGHLY recommend ‘renting’ for extended periods multiple times before buying. And yes, hard to find your people. Especially as they change over quickly. Make friends with fellow snowbirds from hometown.

You're spot on. We built a home in SWFL 5 years ago and are here 6-7 months and in western NY the other 5 months at our other home. It is very hard to connect with others as a seasonal resident and there are costs to be incurred both ways.

Just Me :
Our friends are sort of all over the place so we just meet where we happen to be and hang out. We like spending 2-3 months in the places we like and know but don't really integrate with locals, just say "hey we'll be in Miami Jan-March" and they come down to join us for a bit. we don't have many friends 😅 can count on one hand. And if they don't have the money we use my frequent flyer miles to get them down because I collected them all my life and never cashed them in!

I hate mobile home rental politics!! Feels like high school all over again!! I’m so not that person anymore!! May eventually rent a condo for a few weeks—all that I can afford after a toxic divorce, sigh!!😔
