@ceceonthescene: Replying to @Johnny two giraffes I get why people say this but I think there is more nuance that people are ignoring #fyp #politics #liberal #magaisacult
apologies for the long video. this is a comment that I get pretty often so I figured an analogy might be helpful

Trump can't cancel elections. SCOTUS didn't even let him enact his IEEPA tariffs. They're definitely not going to rule with him on this lol

They did take the documents…The Freedom Plane will carry and deliver some of the most valuable records in the holdings of the National Archives, including the Oaths of Allegiance signed by George Washington, Alexander Hamilton, and Aaron Burr; a Stone Engraving of the Declaration of Independence; the Treaty of Paris that ended the Revolutionary War; a draft printing of the U.S. Constitution; and the U.S. Senate markup of the Bill of Rights. A full list of the documents on display is available at freedomplane.org .

There’s no mechanism for Trump to cancel elections. The only time he’s able to ignore the courts is when there’s a mechanism in which he can. And we didn’t cancel during the war of 1812, Spanish American war, civil war, WWI, wwii, Korea, Vietnam, Iraq 1 and 2…

I think what you are trying to say is ( or at least what I am trying to hear is)... Trump will try to cancel or at least discredit elections but has no power at all to do so., since states run elections and no state would have desire or even mechanisms to follow any such order from the president. Trump could write an executive order, but even if a state wanted to comply, it would take concerted efforts by the legislatures and governors and maybe citizens to pass amendments to their constitutions on how to fill the seats so they could have representation in next congress (even if there were states with legislators that were willing to put themselves in such an unenviable position, those choices would probably be tied up in courts for years without having representatives sworn in.)

Also, the breaks in the system aren’t all malfunctioning, but they work slow. And there isn’t much reporting on when they stop him. And he is constantly looking for new ways to get around the rules, writing more executive orders (that actually doesn’t mean anything). And this is what we see all the time, which makes us all go around with a constant existential dread. No election has ever been cancelled, and there is nothing happening rn that would motivate cancelling them now.

I don’t think that he’d “get away with” canceling the midterms but he’d probably be able to cause enough chaos that he could disenfranchise millions by the time things get cleared up

Thanks! Gonna sound weird but I actually agree with you - if he tried to cancel elections, besides court intervention, there would be a popular movement in the country like we have NEVER seen before — millions of people in the streets, possible general strike. I was saying **I understand the fear**. No president has broken the law as much as Trump, not even Harding, he’s staring down the barrel of a midterm blowout, and the guy tried to overthrow the government in 2021.

They can’t logistically stop the elections. They can intimidate and try to interfere but that’s about it. Elections are held and governed all the way down to the municipalities. And his Save Act is unconstitutional so democratic states won’t enforce it.
