The Batwa are among Uganda’s oldest Indigenous Peoples, traditionally living as hunter-gatherers in the forests of Bwindi Impenetrable and Mgahinga in southwestern Uganda. For generations, they relied on the forest for food, medicine, shelter, and cultural and spiritual practices, developing rich Indigenous knowledge of biodiversity, wildlife, and environmental stewardship. Today, Uganda’s Batwa population is estimated at about 6,500 people. Following their displacement from ancestral forests in the early 1990s to create protected conservation areas, many Batwa communities became landless and continue to face significant socio-economic challenges. Research indicates that 97% of Batwa households experience food insecurity, with 84% facing the most severe levels, making them one of Uganda’s most climate-vulnerable Indigenous communities.
