@c_buildingquietwealth: Dividend stocks and ETFs aren’t the cheat code everyone says they are.🧵 Every time a dividend is paid out, the stock drops by that amount. You’re not getting extra money - you’re just getting your own money back in a different form. One that you pay taxes on. The real problem? The company is choosing when you get taxed. Not you.🙅🏽♀️ If I’m trying to build wealth over 30 years, the last thing I want is to hand the IRS a cut every single year, multiple times a year. Once is enough. And here’s the part nobody talks about: when a company starts paying dividends, they’re telling you they’ve run out of ways to grow. That’s not a great sign for me as an investor. I’d rather own companies that reinvest every dollar and compound over decades. *Not financial advice. The biggest caveat to this is during bad times dividend stocks account for almost all of gains in stocks when you account for inflation. I agree I don’t think it makes sense to just invest for dividends as that does lead to finding some poorer companies because they don’t necessarily know what to do with the money. However it isn’t universal that these companies have stopped growing. They aren’t growing at a high rate anymore but certainly companies like PepsiCo and coke and certainly still growing.

I take it as cash into my offset and don't pay tax as it's saved interest not earned. If you reinvest, what difference does it make either, it's still accumulating.

I noticed the nav erosion when divs were paid on some ETFs. It's why I began looking at total growth (share growth plus dividends) when investing in stocks or funds. There are some investments that pay and still grow, but the divs are small and the fall short of the total growth I want. I'm probably using the wrong term to describe total growth here, but you may understand. Thanks for this post. I mostly agree.

stock price is affected by dividend cuts not payouts. wmt and ko stock price appreciation has not been affected by dividend payouts.

It depends what life stage you’re at. Someone at 30 or 40 doesn’t invest the same as a retiree does.

Good thought but isn’t it also beneficial to use the dividends to invest more in comparison to having unrealized gains you can’t reinvest? Or does it not really matter?

I have a question about what margin power is? I see it under my individual brokerage account but I don’t know what it means. It says cash or margin power. How do you also reinvest any profit? I have just putting money in and buying some etfs. That is it. Thanks for the help!

This is exactly one of the reasons holding dividend etfs and stocks in tax sheltered accounts like 401k, Roth, IRA is more advantageous. Especially if you are just reinvesting and not using the cash flow why pay taxes on money that’s intended to stay invested 👏 Obviously some people have their reasons!
