Unlike her two sisters, Stheno and Euryale, Medusa was mortal. Medusa was originally a beautiful woman and a priestess of Athena. After an event involving the sea god Poseidon, Athena punished Medusa by transforming her hair into snakes and giving her the terrifying ability to turn people into stone. Because of this curse, Medusa lived alone, feared by everyone. Her story becomes famous because of the hero Perseus. Perseus was sent on a dangerous quest to kill Medusa. With help from the gods, he used a shiny shield to look at her reflection instead of looking at her directly. This allowed him to safely approach her and cut off her head. Even after Medusa died, her head kept its powerful ability to turn people into stone.
