Imagine living aboard a motor yacht covered in solar panels: no marina electricity bill, no fuel stops to plan around, just you, the sun and a big battery bank. It is one of the most appealing ideas in boating, so I dug into the real numbers. My benchmark was Shine Down, a 120ft Breaux Brothers GLV-120 floating home in Florida, built for the inland waterways, with 108 high-efficiency solar panels and a lithium iron phosphate battery bank of more than 300 kWh. That is far more solar power and storage than a typical cruising boat carries. Under the Florida sun, those panels can produce around 130 to 194 kWh a day. A vessel her size, running air conditioning, galley equipment, lighting, water systems and nav electronics, can use anywhere from 130 to 310 kWh a day. In high summer the numbers more or less balance, but on grey winter days solar output can fall to 40 to 100 kWh, and that is when the generator earns its place on board. The battery bank alone costs roughly $60,000 to $90,000 (approx. €54,000 to €81,000 / £45,000 to £67,600) before panels, wiring, inverters and labour. The good news is that LFP batteries are rated for 10 to 20 years and around 6,000 charge cycles, which works out at about $2,000 to $4,500 a year. For the right owner in a sunny climate, solar can cut your fuel bill dramatically. My full write-up is in my free explorer yacht newsletter. Link in my bio. Would you live aboard a solar-powered yacht? Tell me where you would cruise her. #boattok #yachttok #solarboat #liveaboard #offgridliving
