personally for me, I'm very newly disabled. I've only had my body like this for a year and a half. so for me, what I can do and what I can't is still a deeply sensitive topic. so it's a 50/50 split of whether a joke will make me laugh or cry.

On that note, it’s also not offensive (to most people) to offer help if you see a disabled person visibly struggling with something. It feels really isolating for me when I’m fighting for my life to open a door or grab something up high and everyone is just like…walking by completely ignoring it.

as long as the joke isn't mocking us or our disability and we're happy to be involved...go ahead. treat us like everyone else

thank you!!!!!! i’m disabled in a very visible way (nerve damage in ankle + walk with a cane) and good natured jokes r very welcome! i feel odd and singled out when people get precious and can’t call a spade a spade. not saying i wanna be mocked but i would’ve giggled abt the sprints too, and i hope my friends do too.

I can sometimes 'predict' the future (it's just pattern recognition but a very deep subconscious version of it) and if my friends didn't make jokes about it idk if I could be normal about it because 'predicting' the future is scary sometimes

if anything i'm more offended when people refuse to acknowledge my disability or tell me i have a "different ability".. like the only different ability i have is being super flexible which isn't even a good ability cus it damages my damn body- completely ignoring someone's disability is only fueling the stigma that being disabled is something shameful when it's not- now it does depend on the kind of joke and who it's coming from, like if a person i just met called me a cr1pple i would be super offended but that's just a little joke in my close circle of loved ones

I remember a collaeaque was connecting someone to me who they thought might be a good professional contact. We were meeting at a cafe and had texted. I think I asked the contact if they knew what I looked like and they said the colleague had told him. Where apparently she hadn't fully told him because he couldn't se me at the cafe and he texted me, and I was like I'm the one in the wheelchair. H hadn't known I used one Later I asked my colleague about it, and she basically said she didn't want to "define " me by it. Like great, but that is a huge visual clue, and is nothing I'm ashamed of or anything. Of course now I double check that someone I'm meeting has a full descruption of me before meeting, lol.

I don’t mind people talking about my issues. My fiancé often makes jokes about my disability and I find it funny and it makes it more lighthearted. As long as it’s not meanspirited I don’t mind at all. I don’t like people walking on eggshells around me it really angers me.

Exactly, it’s so important to remember we’re not a monolith and have our own preferences. Pls ask about them, it’s not rude or inappropriate 🐁💖 I think we’re becoming a bit too scared to mess up, and ppl are creating these very specific rules about how to treat whole communities of people, even tho those rules are different with each one of us and couldn’t possibly be compiled into a single list for someone to follow. Yes some people will feel hurt if you joke about their disability, but others will feel alienated if you don’t. A person can feel offended if you offer help because it feels condescending, while another one wouldn’t appreciate if they’re clearly struggling and nobody comes to help. These preferences can change based on situation too, it’s not always the same. We can’t know what someone likes unless we ask or try it out. Messing up is normal. We all end up hurting someone sometimes, especially if we’re navigating an area that’s unfamiliar to us. It’ll happen wheter we follow what we think is okay or not, so it’s much better to just see the person in front of us as an individual and get to know what they actually like instead of assuming. As a disabled person myself and in my own experience, if someone listens to me and fixes their approach after feedback, I don’t mind when they say something that accidentally hurts me. That’s how they get to know me and I get to know them 💖 I tend to have more issues with people who only follow their own assumptions tbh, they usually end up becoming more hurtful even when it’s not their intention, because they’re not receptive to feedback and can get super defensive :”)

i work as a dsp, we literally call a girl “frog legs” bc of her stiffness sometimes, and she cackles every time. she loves feeling like one of the girls, and she’s realized that being one of the girls means teasing. she loves teasing + being teased, she thinks its so funny

I had a dorm roommate who had cerebral palsy and I quickly learned that having a sense of humor and knowlede the disability is what she wanted.

Some people don't mind being teased for their dyslexia, I really mind. I know I mess stuff up, I don't need every mistake thrown back in my face because you find it funny

I am deathly allergic to peanuts, they will kill me if I eat them, but my family and I have always joked about it and it makes life feel a little less chaotic for me. If we are at the store and they see something with peanuts in it, they will grab the item and go “hey do you want some of this” and I will always respond “sure!” We crack the same jokes about me having a stroke (I’ve had one), if I am stumbling over my words at least one of us will go “are you/I having a stroke?” It really depends on how the joke is phrased and the person making it, if it’s some random person I will feel a little hurt over it but if it’s someone I know and trust I will crack the jokes with you

When I was recovering from my knee surgery (with joint imobilisation) the physio put me on that machine that folds your leg for you and said "We do this today and tomorrow we'll run outside" and that really made me laugh

I don’t like strangers just on the street basically yelling at me “hey can I get a ride?” “You got a license for that?” “Hey let’s race” but if we’re like engaged in an actual conversation and you make some kinda sly teasing comment about it that’s actually a little creative then I actually really like that.

I struggle finding words while talking as part of my disability and I absolutely love when people lovingly makes fun of me. I often point it out and make fun of myself in hopes other feel comfortable to do the same.
