I think you did a great job explaining that. I was also taught when holding a lead rope to not have it in a loop, if the rope gets pulled it would tighten on the fingers in the loop.

Unless you are very familiar with the Horse in question, ideal position of the horse should be to the side and behind you where the horse can just follow you and respect your space. In my opinion, it is the safest place for a horse to be. I own two of them one follows me with great respect for my space add stops when I stop keeping that same distance the other I have to constantly stop and put him where I want him to be. most of the time he minds. He is now 32 so I kind of let him get away with it.

How do you walk/handle a horse who tends to yank away and rear? Not mine, but I’m having issues controlling this horse when turning out where I work

Yes! I was also taught that you don't want to be directly in front of the shoulder (where the horse's head is practically on your shoulder) or in front of the horse in general because if they spook, that shoulder + all that force is coming over on top of you! (I've had several close calls w/ horses spooking and almost running me over, + I watched someone get knocked over from a standstill because they failed to realize where they were standing 🫣)
