@matthewmillwood0: In my 11 years as a max-security guard, I learned the most dangerous test a rookie faces has absolutely nothing to do with violence. It's a conversation. When a new guard walks onto the block, the heavy-hitters don't try to intimidate him right away. They try to be his friend. Inside, they call this hunting for a 'duck'-a rookie they can manipulate. It starts with something completely harmless. An inmate will walk up and ask, 'Hey boss, what city are you from?' or 'Crazy weather out there, right?' If the rookie answers? If he starts making small talk just to pass a 12-hour shift? He already failed the test. Because tomorrow, they'll ask about his favorite sports team. Next week, they'll complain about the warden and wait to see if the rookie agrees. They are slowly grooming him. They want that rookie to feel like it's him and the inmates against the administration. And once they know he's friendly, the trap snaps. They'll ask him to bring in a burger or a soda from the outside. Just a harmless favor for a friend. But the second he crosses that line, they own him. The next favor is a cell phone. Then it's drugs. The inmates who smile at you are infinitely more dangerous than the ones who scream at you. Could you work a 12-hour shift in a cage without making small talk? Tell me in the comments. Make sure to follow me for more real stories from inside the walls." #prisontok #prisonstories #truecrime #correctionalofficer #behindthewalls

I have heard that story so many times. I’ve been in corrections for just two years so you know I can’t say I have a massive experience, but I was new once. I’ve never had that happen to me.

You can be friendly as a professional but as long you follow your policy and regulations and laws. You are fine.

Can I ask you a question? When you finish your academy and training, do they allow you to pick up overtime right after? Texas pays 3750$ for the first year so I’m trying to figure out how to make it work

Tell them straight up we all got rules policy to follow don’t ask for something you can have because you want get it. If you don’t want charges follow the rules kindness and respect will get you farther I life and that’s what I live by if you want my kindness and respect then treat me with kindness and respect I’ll treat you with the same if you can’t I want treat you with kindness and respect. I haven’t had any problems on the inside after I laid down what I expected from them. It’s all about respect you don’t have to be mean to get it kindness goes a long way once you are respected you and the inmates have a less stressful day no anger or hate in there
