I was faced with this question when deciding where to go for further engineering studies . The answer was quite simple: America (even though I had family ties in the UK). A mid-tier US institution (e.g., Georgia Tech, Purdue, Duke etc) is well funded and has enough name recognition to open all sorts of opportunities. The same does not apply for the UK, where only the to top tier institutions (e.g., Oxford, Cambridge) give you that currency. After graduation in the US, the vast economy offers opportunities that I doubt the UK can offer.
