@greatbritisharchitecture: AD What does classical architecture say to you? For centuries, classicism signalled stability, integrity and continuity. The former Lloyds Bank headquarters on Lombard Street — built between 1927 and 1930 — reflects this perfectly, with Corinthian columns outside and Ionic columns inside. But this isn’t pure tradition. It’s Art Deco classicism: classical language reimagined through a 20th century, ‘moderne’ lens. Inside the banking hall you’ll find sleek light fittings, elegant balusters and a bronze mosaic roundel of the Lloyds black horse by sculptor Gilbert Bayes. Lloyds has been evolving since its beginnings in 18th century Birmingham. Today, we no longer work from this building — which now lives on as one of the City of London’s most versatile event spaces, known as Banking Hall. #BankOnLloyds @Lloyds

I’m surprised that Wetherspoons hasn’t bought it and turned it into one of their pubs.

Many famous ancient temples served as banks. Well known examples include the Parthenon in Athens and the Temple of Jupiter in Pompeii. Each had rooms for securing the community’s wealth.

Yes, a bank’s architecture is a facade just as the value money apparently holds.

My city is not nearly as old as London, but one of the older buildings (strangely) is decorated in Egyptian Revival. It’s amazing. Anything like that in London?

The Aerarium populi Romani, or people's treasury was located below the Temple of Saturn in the Roman Forum. Although not strictly a bank in the modern form, it could be considered one of the earliest banks in the world. This could also be a reason why modern banks follow the classical temple form.
