After watching a couple of your videos I now know I have health OCD because I obsess over trying to prevent sickness and this worsened after having my daughter who is now a toddler. I fear bringing sicknesses home to her more than anything and will wash my hands a ridiculous number of times throughout the day. Do you recommend medication for health OCD or just therapy?

Would you say everyone with ocd also have anxiety but not everyone with anxiety also has ocd?

would constantly comparing myself to people (even random strangers) be considered a form of OCD? my friend pointed this out to me and I never really noticed until now: "When bad things happen, you're imagining it happening to you. When good things happen, you think it could never happen to you"

When you start therapy (ERP) should the compulsions get worse before they get better? Or is something we are doing wrong for our teen?

I’m pretty sure I have OCD, but I can’t be diagnosed yet, sadly. I couldn’t figure out if it was OCD or anxiety for a while because I only relate to certain parts of OCD, and sometimes my brain also tells me that I’m lying for attention when I talk to people about it. But I learned recently that’s actually a part of OCD too. I think one of the worst parts I’ve experienced has been tics, and as a kid when people would notice they would sometimes ask if I have Tourette’s, so for a while I thought I might lol. But it’s definitely not as extreme as what I’ve heard about Tourette’s, and I’ve never actually had to say anything. I’ve had to do very strange things, though one of them was making embarrassing sounds, and another was popping my neck a lot. For me I think I only get them to feel even, similar to how if I scratch one arm, I have to scratch the other sometimes, but it’s really intense. My mom always told me to just try not to do it, but I will keep thinking about doing it until I’m not focused, and then I do whatever it was by accident. I’ve also always had things like thinking that if I don’t make wishes at certain times, like 11:11, my family will die or I won’t go to heaven things like that. I always have to say a really long wish, and if I add onto the wish, I have to say it every time. I thought this was normal for a long time, but I’m realizing it’s definitely not. I can’t really stop though, or I’ll have very bad anxiety. I also have pretty bad contamination OCD. I can’t drink off the same things as people, and sometimes I’ll hold my breath for a long time after people cough. If I start thinking someone might be sick, I’ll get anxious. I also have health anxiety, and I’ll think that if I talk about things, I might jinx it too. Like, I was about to type some health anxiety I’ve had, but then I thought I’d probably have anxiety about that lol. I have checking OCD sometimes too. I’ve noticed all of my symptoms get worse when I think about it, or if I’m already having anxiety about something else, or if my brother who has similar symptoms triggers it. He used to get tics too, and sometimes that reminded me of mine. They definitely used to be worse.

I was misdiagnosed for years! Your video triggered me to talk to my therapist and she agrees it’s likely OCD.

Is this also a part of OCD like I think if I stop thinking about all the things that i fear or worry about then something worst gonna happen or they might turn into reality . But it’s hard both way, i can not let things go and i am also tired of my thoughts. They are horrible.

My daughter has both I believe. We are in the initial stages of getting her therapy. My wife’s therapist suggested we find someone specializing in OCD that uses CBT. What would you suggest?

I was misdiagnosed with GAD for about 15 years. I now have my OCD diagnosis and SSRIs are helping me a ton. I recently had an inpatient stay at a behavior health crisis center because of intrusive disturbing and violent thoughts. It will make you feel crazy! Your brain will lie and say you’re helpless. But there is help out there. I’m worlds better than I was several weeks ago. It was so scary. And nothing even triggered it. I weaned off my medication under Dr supervision, and when it finally all left my system I was incredibly sick with my OCD. I never want to feel that again.

as a person who was diagnosed with both generalized anxiety disorder and OCD 25 years ago, this tracks. Back then it was called obsessiveness without compulsiveness for me and through social media I learned that's not how it's thought of today. Compulsions are mental which I think is true for me

Therapist here & have an adult child with OCD. I have definitely observed what you are saying. CBT makes OCD worse- therapist can often become “reassurance-giver” in the OCD cycle without realizing it.
