Sometimes responding to the emotion first helps the nervous system settle enough for the child to reset. Respect still matters — but the order we address things in can change the outcome. I work with a child who back chats, he feeds of any dialogue because he loves to argue his point. I tell him I’m not going to argue with him, he then knows I’m making a choice. I quietly wait for him while he argues with himself, and when he has finished we move on.

Been trying so hard to re-adjust my responses to my son at the moment. Im exhausted from being up in the night with our 2 year old still and not having a decent sleep and find myself having to stop myself before I respond 🥺 I’m getting better at it I feel but still a way to go!
