Far from being just a surface, it is a complex, multi-layered system designed to protect, sense, and regulate. THE THREE MAIN LAYERS EPIDERMIS: The outermost shield. It creates our skin tone and sheds dead cells to keep us waterproof and protected from bacteria. DERMIS: The powerhouse underneath. This layer contains tough connective tissue, hair follicles, sweat glands, and nerve endings that allow us to feel touch and temperature. HYPODERMIS (Subcutaneous): The deep foundation made of fat and connective tissue that provides insulation and cushions our internal organs. FUNCTIONS PROTECTION: It acts as a physical barrier against physical injury, UV radiation, and infection. SENSATION: Through a vast network of receptors, it communicates feelings of heat, cold, pressure, and pain to the brain. REGULATION: It controls body temperature through sweat and blood flow, and it's where we synthesize Vitamin D from sunlight.
