@bdccarpenter: Your fitness activity tracker probably isn't fully trustworthy — and the science backs it up. In the latest episode of the All or Something Podcast, we dig into the research on fitness activity tracker (smart watch) accuracy, diving deep into the research, especially for the Apple Watch, Fitbit, Garmin and Oura Ring. From step counts and heart rate monitoring to calorie burn and sleep tracking, we break down what the data actually says, and the results might surprise you. Whether you're training for a race, trying to hit 10,000 steps, or just wondering if your tracker is giving you the full picture, this episode is for you. What we cover: • How accurate are Apple Watch, Fitbit, Garmin and Oura Ring really? • Which metrics are most (and least) reliable? • What does the latest research say about wearable accuracy? • Should you trust your tracker's calorie and heart rate data? If not, how big is the margin of error? • Perhaps most importantly, does it matter if smart watchers and fitness activity trackers aren't fully accurate? Maybe not. Find the All or Something Podcast on YouTube as well as all major streaming platforms. 🎧 #smartwatch #applewatch #garmin #fitbit #oura

So its better just to walk for 1h instead of trying to reach 10k daily?

It also goes the other way, if your arms are still, if you are holding something, pushing a shopping trolley etc then it doesn't count your steps. I once walked for half an hour and it only picked up 200 steps.

I think these are good for following trends. If you constantly hit 16k and one day you're at 10k you can look back and see it was a lighter day. But I think using them for accurate tracking or even worse, following spent calories is a slippery slope

my Samsung watch never counts any steps when I'm sitting. Regardless of how much I've been shuffling.

So, how should steps be counted? Or should we even do so?

THANK YOU. I could spend the entire day with my husband and he would have thousands more steps than I. And I've got the shorter stride

What’s more accurate for workout tracking? I use my smart watch and the treadmill to track a session and the discrepancy between the two is huge. My watch often says I burnt 2x as many calories as the treadmill does

My favourite is when I’m an hour into driving and my watch tells me I hit my target step goal

If you’re a piano player, all activity tracking watches are fooled. I do 2000 steps for 30 minutes of practice 😂

My dad attaches his watch to his bike when cycling, and it always reaches at least 10k, even though he's not actually walking.

I do think these tools are best as a trend eg did I do about the same each day, am I doing more than last week etc rather than trusting as an absolute value.

So should we not use them? Genuinely curious. It’s decent at heart rate, right?

I'm a public speaker professionally and my watch logs swimming activities during my presentations all the time. it also logged 30 minutes on an elliptical while I was sorting Lego bricks last week. it's funny to see what it hallucinates, but a good reminder of the limitations

Why does the number of steps we take matter? Who decided what the correct number is?

your step counters suck. I've been sleeping and got 40 steps so yeah not perfect but not 300-500 during sleep.

The oppisite happened to me yesterday I walked 6 miles but I guess my arms weren’t moving enough? only to look down at my fitness app and it said only 3.8 miles. Mind you I’ve walked that trail almost everyday for 2 years. I was so mad 😭 but I have OCD so I went to the gym and walked on the treadmill until it said 6 miles. Safe to say my feet hurt this morning 😂
