@ambymathur: 👏 Free 👏 public 👏 healthcare 👏 My move to italy guide is linked in my bio for anyone who might find it helpful ❤️ . . . . #ambyadventures #movetoitaly #freehealthcare #lifeabroad #americansinitaly free healthcare, life abroad, Americans in italy, move to italy
I live down the street from the Red Cross ambulance service here in Italy. I wasn’t feeling well yesterday so I walked down there for them to check me out and just ask what I should do. My symptoms evidently mimicked a heart attack in women (it wasn’t) so they gave me an echocardiogram and said it would be best to go to the emergency. The ambulance brought me there, the hospital gave me two more echocardiograms and drew blood twice. I was there for 6 hours and all it cost me was the €20 cab ride home. They are super thorough and super friendly. Great care and nothing out of pocket. In the US the ambulance ride alone would have cost me thousands. I don’t mind paying taxes as much here because it ACTUALLY BENEFITS THE PEOPLE. What a concept.

Krista // Moving To Italy :
To everyone saying “it’s not free you pay for it” - just because your taxes pay for it doesn’t mean that having this peace of mind when you need it isn’t valuable. I pay a CRAP ton every month for health insurance in the us (plus pretty high taxes in California) and then when my husband needed an emergency appendectomy, they refused to cover it, saying the surgeon was out of network and that because I drove him to the hospital instead of calling 911, it wasn’t covered as an emergency 🫠… I’ve given birth in Italy, paid taxes in Italy, had broken bones in Italy… and given birth in the US, paid taxes (and health insurance) in the US, had multiple US hospital stays. Health care is BETTER in Italy. Not perfect. But much better than a bill for $7k+ just because you got sick (and even though you already pay $20k+/year for “insurance”)

Little fun fact: the tessera sanitaria is not issued by the Health System but by the agenzia delle entrate, the Italian IRS. No matter which Country you live in, but tax institutes are brutally efficient only one way.😅
