@thepottymouthguru: If you grew up always explaining other people’s behaviour… always finding the good in them… always giving one more chance… that might not be simple kindness. That was your nervous system trying to stay safe. 🧠 Kids often learn to see caregivers as good no matter what. Because the alternative is just too terrifying for a child’s brain to hold. So the brain adapts, reframes and rationalizes. And that survival pattern can follow you into adulthood… where you keep excusing behaviour that hurts you. Understanding why you do this is the first step to finally changing it. ❤🤟🏻🌿 #unfuckyourself #thepottymouthguru #childhoodpatterns #nervoussystem #selfawareness
Yep. Our little kid hearts would have broken if we had realized our primary people were failing us so bad. I am upward of 40 and have chosen people all my life who repeated those failures. It has been heartbreaking for decades.

What I don’t understand why didn’t we learn meanness from them, too? I cannot understand or replicate meanness but it can be useful (rarely)

I am always making good excuses for people's bad behavior. So this makes sense

I project my empathy onto people who had none, it’s my empathy I was feeling. I didn’t realize my nervous system mirrored my empty on bad people UNTIL today. I never knew why I was struggling to NOT do that. Wow good to know!

Did you grow up being the one who always saw the good in everyone? 👀

I think that two things can be true here like, yes people have cognitive dissonance or trauma responses around this, but you could also just see the good people because you’re a good person.

I just screamed on the top of my lungs into my pillow because I just realized from childhood, I was utterly terrified of both of my parents, and I had to act like it was an average Tuesday😳

Maybe that’s because it’s reality. And you are learning to see two sides of the same coin.
