@juntimes2: And I know there’s a big difference between ethnicity and nationality but I also don’t understand french people’s obsession with knowing my ethnicity. Living in a Paris for 4 years has made me realize just how differently europeans and north americans perceive race. #asianabroad #asianexperience #storytime #parislife #livinginfrance
I don’t think “where are you from” is rude, personally. And sometimes by that, people mean what is your ethnicity. Most of the time it is just curiosity and not mean-spirited.

I think it’s acceptable for people in Paris asking where you’re from and your culture, it means they’re being curious and they appreciate asian culture ✨

I agree with lots of points, but saying "oh my wife is also Chinese" I really don't see the problem...
I'm Armenian living in Paris and whenever I said that i'm Armenian everyone say "oh my brother's best friend is Armenian " or sometimes even someone less close, but for me I never thought that it can be rude for someone.
Or when someone will tell me "I'm from Canada" I will say that my best friend is Canadian too...for me it's a natural small talk

Imo it’s not a French thing, it’s just a local thing, happens anywhere when you ‘look foreign.’ As a white guy living in Japan, I get the ‘hello!’ treatment too, plus the drunk salaryman or the student group doing broken English impressions for laughs. Say you’re French and suddenly they bring up their trip to Paris, Spain and Germany or their cousin dating a European guy. And yes, my Black French friend gets the ‘but where are you really from’ too. It’s a universal thing, not a French one. There are ignorant people everywhere, and I’m sorry you’re running into so many of them in my country

To people who’s saying it’s not rude or racist, from my experience here in France, They always ask me where I’m from even I’m not talking to them, cafe, restaurant, bus even at metro. Sometimes they ask me” are you Chinese?“ “are you Korean? Japanese? “and when I tell them I’m Japanese they always start talking shit about China which makes me SICK💀 They are not always asking this question with good intentions!

The ni hao aside, which is rude, why wouldnt people ask you where you’re from? You’re obviously not native to France

As a French black man, asking someone where is « really » from is absolutely rude. However, asking someone origins / ancestry is not rude. The context is very important to determine if the person is just genuinely curious or just noisy and rude.
