You’re wrong the The union pension belongs to the pension fund. If you work 40 years and then die the money just vanishes. If I spend 40 years building up a $3 million 401(k) and die. My family has $3 million.

You left out the part where pensions are controlled by the company. They decide where it’s invested and if they go bankrupt, you’re gonna take a hard hit at least with the 401(k) I get to control where it’s invested.

youre not wrong but a pension dies with you or your spouse. A 401k can be inherited and also had a cash value. even if the market drops at time of retirement it will bounce back as it always has. also you would want to draw a monthly check because pulling it all out at once has much larger tax consequences.

That’s not necessarily true. Your pension funds are invested just like a 401k. The big difference is it’s being invested by trustees. In addition, there’s always a chance of a pension going belly up. These are just the reality’s.

Union uses your pension to fund other union jobs hoping they happen. Thats the reason unions pension can be taken away or lowed significantly when they run low in funding.
