for sure a deep tread, and ankle support is a must for hiking footwear, and of course breathability. I got lick with my best pair of hiking boots, and found a $140 pair on clearance for $30. they're like 10 years old now, I've gotten a ton of use out of them, and they're still almost as comfortable as the day I bought them.
