Even then, "Red" isnt necessarily bad. . its only really bad, if it hits 0db or above as thats when youll get clipping/distortion issues 🙃

Coming not from a mixing background and understanding of sound and dB calculations but a STEM one, what could possibly be the reference sound if your scale is so far into the negative dB that 0 is considered the threshold before distortion?

-12db was the standard in video for YEARS, until YouTube came and everyone uploaded at 0. So if you have a properly balanced video it appears quiet amongst the noise

Oy vey, BOTH of these instructions are quite bad. They both are dealing with peak meters. Peak meters don’t equate to loudness. The only thing they do is, if you are paying attention to them, is prevent distortion.

Generally, the colour measures in OBS are closer to Broadcast loudness, specifically EBU R128 (-23DBfs). The default red zone in OBS isn't the distortion range for singular tracks, but multiple. Of course, a big issue is outside dedicated editing software, virtually no recording software has an actual Loudness meter, including OBS.

There are different loudness scales too, in DaVinci for example you can set your meters for YouTube, Netflix, Disney, etc…. I’d imagine streaming is closest to YouTube’s -14LUFS -1 peak

Sample peak is only good for those who use an actual mic preamp such as a dbx 286 or similar, then you have multiple gains plus compression to work with and then that meter is highly accurate and at 20 it’s a lot louder.

anybody have recommendations for a good mic? I've always had trouble getting one that's sensitive enough. even now unless I'm next to it it's really quiet and it already has a compressor on it with the Steelseries Sonar app
