@sarajaneho: In traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), phlegm is more than just mucus—it’s considered a pathological byproduct of impaired fluid metabolism in the body. When the body’s fluids aren’t properly transformed and transported (a function often attributed to the spleen in TCM theory), dampness can accumulate. Over time lingering dampness can thicken and congeal into what TCM calls phlegm. TCM describes two main forms: • Visible phlegm — mucus that can be coughed up from the lungs or throat. • Invisible phlegm — internal accumulations that may manifest as nodules, brain fog, heaviness in the body, bloating, emotional dullness, or a sense of mental fog. Because phlegm is viewed as something the body is trying to expel, it’s common in China to spit it out rather than swallow it (which would be the worst thing to do if you want to clear it). Many traditional practices focus on reducing dampness and supporting fluid transformation. Examples include moxibustion, warming therapies like foot soaks, and dietary adjustments. In China people with phlegm limit foods that generate dampness—such as cold foods, dairy, sugar, and fried foods—and favor warming drinks like hot water or herbal teas to help break it down instead. whatever reason you have, do not spit it out. Use napkins and throw it in the garbage bin.

I can honestly say I have never once generated any amount that would make me need to discard it from my mouth, that is so disgusting. I guess I'm lucky.

I body doesn’t create phlegm unless I am unwell. You shouldn’t be producing phlegm on a daily basis ?

the stomach has its own mucus lining. if the body can expell it one way, it can do it the other way. its not that deep
