I totally agree that transcription is the key to unlock all forms of music really. I have transcribed thousands of songs, including Bill Evans. Additionally, I have learned some of his songs reading other people‘s transcriptions. I have always gotten 100 times more information by doing the transcription myself. It ain’t easy, but if it were, everyone would do it.

Okay so when you say transcribe do you mean to physically write out the notes and rhythm you hear on sheet music or on music software. Or do you mean to like transcribe it mentally. By memorizing what you hear him play and try to play it on the piano by ear

So are you basically saying there’s a predetermined sequence of steps jazz artists use to get a specific sound? Like there a sense/logic/method to get jazz Melodies, chords, progressions or whatever they are called? Is It like maths? Do things add up? Or… are you saying there is a FORMULA for jazz music. I’m very good at maths so would I be good at piano too? Is piano and maths. Similar?

So true. It’s so easy to use the excuse that these guys are geniuses and not try to figure it out or try to get to their level, but if you break it down, they are just using theory and arranging tricks that we know and understand (if we’ve studied and gotten to a certain level), we just have to transcribe, break it down, and de-mystify their playing. 😁

melody in jazz usually has 1 to three lines disguised as harmony when really it's 1 line to tell the story(top line), 1 line to create suspense and a rolling resolving line (bottom or middle interchangeably). these are melodic devices that are backed by inversions that fit and spaced voicing makes that easier. I hope this helped.
