@piareadz: Of course these are just my opinions and thoughts on this whole SJM conversation that everyone seems to be having. That all being said, I do not support SJM. I do think she’s harmful and problematic. Shes not someone I will ever platform here on my page. #BookTok #bookish #fyp #fypシ #sjmaas

That was the most beautiful, well thought out explanation I’ve ever heard. I do think that it’s important to remember though that these books (ACOTAR) were written between 2015 and 2021. Was this a time when society was more progressive then say the 1900s? Absolutely, but important topics like those that you spoke of were still “new” in the sense of western and even world societal acceptance and inclusion. For example gay marriage was only legalised in America in 2015, Australia in 2017, Europe varies by country from roughly 2010 to 2023 (need a fact check on that one though), and many non-Western countries still don’t recognise gay marriage. As someone part of the queer community it did feel like Mor was just the “token gay character”, but when these books were written, “being gay” wasn’t necessarily a widely accepted concept. Does that excuse outrageous and horrible behaviour? Absolutely the hell not. In saying that, in the world we live in, being successful does unfortunately mean conforming to societal norms, which I hope is something the world continues to move past and away from to accept everyone equally. I understand Mor and the queer community is only a small fraction of the importance of what you were conveying in your video, I just wanted to add my thoughts. I am interested to see how SJM handles these topics in her upcoming releases of ACOTAR 6&7 though

Don’t get me wrong , I’m not a huge fan of Brandon Sanderson, nor have I really been in the booktok much . But his work does heavily involve other diverse set of groups . Mistborn ofc isnt part of that conversation . It was very lacking in women and poc representation but some other works of his I’ve read . Like stormlight is very clearly representative of Arab and South Asian culture . Even names was similar to such like kaladin as well as features and skin tones and then another work of his I’ve read is yumi and the night painter . Which is a clear representation of East Asian culture . I’ve yet to see any black or African representation but I don’t think his work has diversity as sidelined in his books but rather the main focus and core of his books .

I loooovee this take, so fleshed out. I think it’s only human that writers biases may come out in their writing but I also think that as the readers we can really add to that writers development both as an author and a human by pointing out where that may be happening 🤷🏻‍♀️it’s the response to these criticisms that really determine if a author is going to keep my attention or not

I also feel like portraying a deeply misogynistic race which is meant to mirror Middle Easterns, while also portraying them as “muscular” and “sex driven” it can cause the fandom to sexualize both the Illyrians and their real world adjacent as u said

It always jumps out at me when seemingly every poc character in the story treats the white lead as if they’re the centre of their universe, even if it means sacrificing themselves to further said white lead’s journey 😬

This was so beautifully explained. I think also (I could be wrong since its been years since I read those books) Mor was forced or pressured out of the closet by the fmc. And it was never touched on again after that. Overall SJM is the second biggest disappointment after JKR

Could you make a part 2 of a white author that has done diverse casting well?

The book space has changed so much and people are applying critical thinking analysis in what would normally happen in an academic environment. I just think publishers need to come to the realisation that in 2026, consumers expect a wider range of perspectives represented in art/media but I don’t know how you balance that with allowing artists the freedom of expression without being obligated to create art in a certain way. (Ideally we would get to a point where we shouldn’t have to beg for breadcrumbs)

yesssss thank you!! I keep seeing this one creator against my will posting counter arguments trying to justify and deflect the blame against sjm. it’s been driving me nuts seeing the comment section. I saw you commented on their post and they were so rude back to you 😭😭 it’s crazy how often this argument is discussed and yet people continue to blatantly ignore the harm caused once they are educated.

honestly it’s such a complex discussion! something I keep coming back to (outside of just sjm) is “does this constitute as them being a poor writer and/or it being a poor book”. (This is completely subjective and up for debate) What I land on personally, is that authors like this lack the nuance/depth that I think makes a wonderful writer (which is again also subjective) Your point about it being decorative as opposed to meaningful is exactly it! however somehow gaps or missed opportunities somehow doesn’t always take away from the entertainment value, kinda like crappy reality tv. But the difference between reality tv and trendy books is people accept reality tv for what it is, but for some reason….people are so protective over books like acotar

How i see it is mostly like, the author probably imagines a big world that stretches in far away lands and obviously produces many different people of different races and cultures , but the story takes a central place in one particular place but that doesnt mean that the other people so not exist or that the main characters do not ever come into contact with people from other lands or races. That doesn’t mean that the diversity is done purely or is weak writing, that just means that the story revolves around a group of characters who carry the plot forward and that these reimagined ancient kingdoms are not necessarily multi-ethnic like a modern day New York would be!!!

I’m getting so sick of readers who keep trying to use the ‘diverse’ side characters as a ‘gotcha’ or as a means to try and convince me to read it. ‘There’s a queer side couple in the fourth book!’ baby I don’t CAREEEE 😭
