What is a CLI? Command line explained in plain English, and why every AI tool has one (Claude Code, Codex, Gemini CLI) What is a CLI, in plain English? CLI stands for command line interface, and it means texting your computer. It's the black window with the blinking line, the Terminal on a Mac. You type one line, press enter, the computer does it and texts you back the result. Before there were icons to click, this is how everybody used a computer. Why it beats clicking: say you need forty invoices renamed with today's date. One by one, that's forty renames and your whole Tuesday night. In the command line it's one line, done in a second. Type something the computer doesn't know and it replies
Type something the computer doesn't know and it replies "command not found", which is computer for "new phone, who dis." Why every AI tool suddenly has a CLI: 1. AI coding agents and AI assistants all run in the terminal now: Claude Code, OpenAI Codex CLI, Google Gemini CLI, GitHub Copilot CLI and the Cursor CLI. (Google moved personal Google accounts from Gemini CLI to its Antigravity CLI in June 2026; Gemini CLI still runs for work accounts and API keys.) 2. AI is a text machine. A large language model reads text and writes text. Buttons are made for human eyes and a mouse. For an AI agent to click a button the way you do (computer use), it takes a picture of the screen, finds the button, clicks, and takes another picture to check. A command is one line of text. 3. It's lighter on the AI's memory. Every screenshot is a big read for the context window. Anthropic's own Claude Code best-practices guide calls CLI tools the most context-efficient way to work with outside services. 4. Every app is getting a phone number. That's what a command-line tool is: Stripe has one (stripe), GitHub has one (gh), and new ones keep showing up built with AI agents in mind, like an open-source CLI for Google Workspace (gws, covering Gmail, Google Drive and Google Calendar; not an officially supported Google product). Every app with a number is an app your AI can text. 5. The AI learns a new number on its own. Almost every CLI has a help command that lists everything it can do. The AI reads it and figures out the app. What this means if you don't code: you never type any of these commands. You text your AI in plain English, like "pull last month's refunds from Stripe and give me the total", and the AI agent texts Stripe in Stripe's language. For anything that changes something, you set it to text you first and wait for your yes (human in the loop). Two conversations going, and you're only in one of them. CLI vs MCP vs API: the CLI is one of three ways an AI connects to your tools. MCP (Model Context Protocol) and APIs are the other two, and knowing which one to use for which job is how you build reliable AI automation for a small business, an agency or a team. This works for anyone automating admin work: invoices, email, spreadsheets, payments, CRM updates, reports. If you want your AI texting your real tools, I teach that inside my community: your email, your sheets, your payments, plus the two other acronyms you've been nodding along to, MCP and API, and when your AI should use each one. There are eight courses, and the first one starts from zero. If you're interested, the link is in my profile. #cli#mcp #claudecode #aiagents
