@themidwifeedit: I had a woman ask me in clinic the other day if she should buy a Doppler to listen to her baby’s heartbeat at home. My answer was a very quick NO! 👎 When midwives listen to your baby’s heartbeat, we’re not just hearing one sound. We can hear the placenta, cord blood flow, baby’s movements, mum’s heartbeat and baby’s heartbeat. We’re trained to know the difference and to listen to the pattern, not just the sound Using a Doppler at home can be risky. It can either falsely reassure you that everything is okay, or cause panic if you can’t find the heartbeat In fact, home fetal Dopplers have been banned for personal sale in Australia by the Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) since August last year because of these risks If you’re ever worried about your baby in pregnancy, please come in and get checked! 🩷

The only way I've ever been able to get through to people about this is to say, imagine you saw someone walking in front of you on the street just collapse in the middle of the road. Would you just check for a pulse and move on with your day after finding one??

I don’t care what anyone says I’ll be buying one of these for my next pregnancy. I had a stillbirth in July last year and was in hospital midwife’s checked with a Doppler 4:30am I was on heart monitors hours and my son still passed away before 8am the next day I know how to count kicks and for me this will be reassurance

Learnt my lesson with these yesterday. I'm literally a midwife myself and tried to listen to my baby in the antenatal clinic at work, couldn't find the cheeky bugger and scared the crap out of myself because I could find him the say before, luckily a very nice consultant was happy to run the ultrasound over me to check he was ok. I'm 13 weeks and will only be letting my midwife listen from now on 😅 at least until he's much bigger and easier to find. Even with the right training, these babies can be tricky, it's not worth the stress
