🇿🇦 In 1960, South Africa’s apartheid regime tightened its grip. Black South Africans were forced to carry passbooks at all times—documents designed to control where they lived, worked, and traveled. It was a system built to reduce the Black majority to cheap, disposable labor on their own land. But the people refused to break. On March 21st, 1960, the Pan Africanist Congress launched a nationwide campaign of defiance. The plan was simple: leave your passbook at home, march to the police station, and offer yourself up for arrest. The goal was to fill the jails and bring the economy to a standstill. In the township of Sharpeville, thousands gathered. The atmosphere was festive. People sang freedom songs, chanting "Izwe lethu"—Our land. But the apartheid state did not respond with arrests. They responded with war. Without warning, 300 armed police opened fire on the unarmed crowd. The shooting lasted for two minutes. Sixty-nine people were killed, and over 180 were wounded. According to the official inquest, the vast majority were shot in the back as they tried to run away. The Sharpeville Massacre shocked the world and forever changed the anti-apartheid struggle. It proved that the regime could not be reasoned with—it had to be dismantled. 🔗 Explore the full interactive Black History timeline: https://BlackHistoryUnleashed.com 📧 Get hidden history delivered to your inbox — sign up at BlackHistoryUnleashed.com ✊🏾 Discover more at ReignSupremeX.com #Apartheid #SouthAfrica #AfricanHistory #BlackHistory #ReignSupremeX
