Pound for pound bodybuilder types are far from strongest. Just look for Anatoly vids.

yo imma keep it a buck. just cuz i go to the gym doesnt mean I have discipline. I LOVE the gym. it takes zero discipline because thats where I wanna be. I failed/dropped out of college because I couldn't even make myself go to the classes

I was army infantry during gwot for 5 years and worked as a roughneck on drilling rigs afterwards for 7 years. Now I’m a bodybuilder. I am 100% stronger than I ever was doing dangerous manual labor jobs. Maybe not as tough as I used to have to be, but definitely stronger.

yyy yeah no. i have experienced both and yeah unless you do like strongman thing you will not be "stronger". manual labor hits your abdominal and stabilizer muscles WAY HARDER and you get actually stronger not to mention endurance

Not necessarily. Strength is more than looking jacked. I’m strong. And I’ve been jacked. And I’ve been lean. And I’ve been stronger than jacked guys. It’s complicated,

Folks who are having a hard time: muscle endurance (manual labor), jacked (muscle development).

In my experience as a formerly mostly jacked guy (couldn’t get abs) you might be strong if you are jacked but it rarely translates to real world muscle. I look less jacked now but am absolutely stronger than before

depends on what manual labor. lost the most weight and gained the most muscle working at a sawmill piling boards. but it did treat the job like a gym workout rather than a job. I used to love it. id go hard.

As a woman who used to manual labor, going to the gym will literally help you get better at the manual labor too. The intentional strength training helps a ton.

The other thing with all this functional strength stuff you've been discussing is that the human body gets good at doing specific things. Strength is generalizable, power is generalizable, but performance at specific movements needs to be trained specifically.
So the "gym guy" and the "blue collar" guy are going to find that they're better at the movements they do more frequently. People like to talk about how they gym strength guy wouldn't be as good as the blue collar guy at throwing the hay bale, but they don't like to talk about how the gym guy is going to easily out perform the blue collar guy at bench press (in general, assuming gym guy has been lifting for a while and blue collar got doesn't).
Muscles will also adapt to specific stimulus so BC guy may have more task specific endurance at throwing bales.
But now say you take BC guy and have him doing strength and power movements in the gym and throwing bales every day, he's going to throw the bales even better.
That's literally what competitive athletics are: Strength and Power applied dynamically to sport specific movements.

Okay, same question, different approach. (though I have worked heavy manual labor with gym bros, and they always gas out)
I think what they're asking is Ryan Reynolds or Eddie Hall?

it’s not about discipline. it’s a hobby. we’re just lucky to have the free time.
