@hayat_salukis: Purebreds as a whole are in decline, but not many are declining quite as rapidly as the Saluki. What does the future entail for us? I always make an effort to sell at least one Saluki per litter to a newer, younger person in hopes that it will make a difference in their long term survival. Neither I nor most other Saluki breeders are really breeding “enough” to keep up with the decline though— we need to focus on figuring out how to keep this breed going as we phase out ourselves— and add new breeders who will continue to protect this breed in the future. #saluki #sighthound #akc #dogtok #dogbreeding
I try to educate people that ask what kind of breed is my dog. Most have never heard of the Saluki breed, and are quite interested. Most of the information that I can give them is from you Lauren❣️You're a wealth of information!

I have a silken windhound and love sighthounds immensely. I met a couple of smooth salukis last weekend that were quite strange! Do you think silkens differ a lot from salukis?

I knew salukis were a breed i just didn’t initially have any interest in them. However I love sight hounds and creators like you have made me a lot more open to them

I feel like they are or have been quite gatekeppt, I feel like information about them wasn't as easily accessible as it is today. I had a hard time finding information about them that wasn’t more than I could read in dog breed books (bare in mind saluki books weren't available where I live) and I feel like they were mostly written from the perspective of an outsider. Because my dog and most other salukis I know have two different personalities one who is bubbly, playful and a cuddlebug at home with their owners and one who is aloof and a bit calmer in a strange environment surrounded by strangers.
But I have to say I really like people like you who just say things like they are, and are willing to answer questions from someone like me ❤️

I think the biggest issue among majority of the breeds is the gatekeeping and ageism. I got, and still get, treated like a child which is part of the reason I try not to really reach out to people anymore and just stay to myself. All deerhound people ignored me until years later when I had 2 borzoi and "proved" myself as being serious enough. I had whippet breeders give me multiple reasons as to why I couldn't have a dog, main one being I was too young (19-20 at the time) and one said I didn't have the finances to even be able to purchase a dog from them. I got my first borzoi from the first person who was willing to give me the time of day which was both a blessing and a mistake. I still don't really feel welcomed in borzoi and I constantly get looks and comments from people when they find out where my first borzoi is from. Constantly rethink having borzoi or even doing dog stuff because of it.

This was years ago, but when I tried contacting saluki breeders I either got ghosted, or met with heavy gatekeeping. One breeder demanded to know how I got their email (it was listed in a local show premium), and then told me to never contact them again. That made quite an impact on me, and I gave up trying to contact any more.

I see both sides. I think if breeders aren't easily reachable by email, they could also provide a link to their Facebook kennel page (if they have one) since DogBook is such a big thing. Also, maybe an automatic email response would help... "We have no breeding plans until year 2xxx" or whatever

The biggest issue with the breeds I’m interested in, is gatekeeping & my age. It hasn’t mattered to some breeders I live in a home with a fenced in yard, it comes down to my age or their unwillingness to even discuss the breed. One of the breeds I’m interested in, I hit the lottery with a breeder who knows I’m serious and have the time (Manchesters), and I have been very interested in Saluki’s but it’s been a issue of meeting them or breeders not wanting to even discuss them with me😅

I contacted three Salukis breeders before one (you) took me seriously. I’m thankful everyday you sold to me. I am proud to showcase the breed and see myself doing so long into the future.

I also contacted several saluki breeders before acquiring one. In most cases, if I got a response, it was that nothing was available. Or that I was too young to be serious (I was 21 at the time). I do think it’s more there aren’t enough puppies available for the demand, though yes, partly a bit of gatekeeping (though that is breeder specific). It’s certainly been easier in inquiring for my second after already owning one. I have no plans to breed myself but hope to contribute as possible with those in my home over time. Summit surely loves being a breed ambassador as he loves people.

Saluki’s are a breed I’ve considered, but unfortunately have had to rule out due to availability and also prey drive related concerns. It’s a shame because I adore everything I’ve read about them otherwise. Yours are beautiful, and I hope your club can figure out a way to help with the decline!

We are having the same issue in our club. I am young and new but I have a similar experience. It is difficult in our breed to even find websites or emails .. I went to multiple regional specialties and the national prior to getting to a place where i felt like I could apply. I got lucky with an incredible male to start as it was her first chow litter and she took a chance on me from a reference from the stud owner. Chows arent the “easiest” (for me they are but they are unique dogs) but i think for an owner than appreciates their traits and a sound well bred puppy they are incredible. The big issue to me is our club website and other places to get information is incredibly hard to navigate and often outdated, almost all apartments ban chows (when i was renting i made spreadsheets, called around etc 95% banned) and for many especially people my age buying a house is simply out of reach. The good quality chows are also few and far between and those that produce them often do so infrequently. I would love to see more active mentoring for young adults getting into clubs as often we are treated the same as those decades older and not taught how to take up the mantle.

I imagine the way global politics are going, with so many of us barely able to afford our own survival, it's going to be even harder for young people to even be able to afford any kind of involvement in their breeds 😔 I can't even get my dog the breed recommended health checks atm cuz insurance doesn't cover preventative care

Would you, or any other breeder, allow a puppy/dog to go to someone with an unfenced yard? I live on 13 acres with a pond in a fairly rural area. My whippet does very well, he is almost 2.5 years old. We instilled boundaries very early on when I got him at 11 weeks. He does have a fairly reliable recall as well, which I know Saluki tend to struggle with.

This is one of the “Maybe some day” breeds I have eyes on, but likely one of the most intimidating ones to get into—it really does feel like a secret circle. I first looked into them when I made the hard decision to get out of greyhounds, and they seemed like a good fit, but simply the challenge of finding a breeder who would want to work with someone just getting into it (and would want to owner handler show) is daunting.

Yep, I feel like Azawakh have exploded in popularity (relatively speaking, of course) over the last couple years for just this reason. Just off the top of my head I can think of 8-9 litters that have been born in the last 2 years. Most of those seem to be going to people my age (late 20s to early 30s). My local show never had a single Azawakh until 2024. This year there were FOUR there, from three different breeders. My breeder responded very quickly to my inquiry and was willing to take a chance on me despite having very limited experience with the breed.

I haven't had an issue getting into any of my breeds. I'm more of just a stud dog home because there's no way I could afford the money or the time to actually breed. And if you look at trends as a whole, the younger generations are making less than the older generations. We have less expendable time and income.
