Knowing what happened to Artemisia, her version is so intense and filled with meaning that if, you’re a woman, you’ll understand in a heartbeat exactly what it meant for her to paint it the way she did.

I prefer Artemisia Gentileschi’s version. It’s so visceral. Caravaggio makes it feel like he is imploring you to feel bad for Holofernes and Judith is at fault for wanting to protect her people and her land.

My biggest question is about motive. What did he do ?

Even though I am a fan of Caravaggio, I prefer Artemisia Gentileschi’s version. It is more violent, makes you feel the anger, the horror, the disgust and Even the desperation.

In another version by him the head is his own. The model for Judith is known and his portrayals of her seem to invoke some personal relationship issues.
