@philosophyminis: Imagine the year is 2055, and some eccentric billionaire of the future has an exciting announcement to make. They have invented something called the ‘teletransporter.’ The teletransporter is a new technology that will scan your entire bodily composition. It’ll map your brain and record every particle in your body from the top of your head to the bottom of your feet, and then it will atomise you. It’ll break you down into your component parts and send these parts at the speed of light across to Mars, where another teletransporter will reconstruct you using the same ingredients. The question that Parfit asks is, ‘Is the person on Mars the same person that left Earth, or have you actually killed the Earthling and reconstructed a Martian replica?’ The thought experiment is confusing even more, when we imagined that we could create thousands of replicas of this exact body composition. And so if we believe that consciousness is the result of our brain, does this mean that we have thousands of identical consciousnesses feeling the same thing? So why is it that first personhood, that feeling of me being me, is limited to only one body? The teletransporter is an interesting thought experiment, but it’s also a good question to ask ourselves. Would you enter the teletransporter, or do you believe there is more to who you are than just your body?

It’s not you. It’s an identical version. But your consciousness ends there. It’s a new entity, it may think it’s me. And for intents and purposes it is. But my sentience ends and rebuilding me doesn’t restart it. It simply starts a new being that’s identical to me.

isn't this just a remixed ship of theseus thought experiment?

Our soul - for want of a better word - is not physical and therefore can’t be physically replicated. And it’s that that makes us unique. So they could replicate the physical being, but no - it would not replicate “me”. And yes I know it’s a thought experiment and I’m missing the point yadda yadda

in terms of physics, this is one of the most difficult things to realize, even more difficult than interstellar travel with folding space time. I prefer to teleport my consciousness to another body in the destination.

The billionaire has invented it? Seems unlikely but okay

This thought experiment doesn’t take how experience shapes you enough into account. Who I am isn’t only because of my biology, but is also a result of what has happened to me or how I choose to react to something in the moment. A kid being mean to you in school or having loving parents will have an impact on how you view the world or the actions you do or don’t take. Facing specific circumstances can change how you think of yourself, like thinking you might never steal for example while never having faced extreme poverty. So are you a person who wouldn’t steal or have you never been given conditions where you’d make that choice?

It would make more sense to describe the body as information and send that information to Mars and reconstruct the body from the information. Begging the question is there a difference between a physical body and its complete informational description?

It depends on how consciousness works which we don't know.

Consciousness is an ongoing chemical process, much like life. Once you stop it that's it over. The temeporter clone is just that. A clone.

If consciousness is based on quantum states and entanglement then no technology can clone it. If not, then in principle it’s possible to create a human with any set of phantom memories.

It’s different because if the machine preserved you and made a exact copy of you, you would not be conscious in both bodies at the same time

Also interesting thought, what if the Martian appears 1 instant before you’re teleported. Does this imply your death?

by science u r the same as long as the machine doesn't do mistakes. as any thing u remember is physically encoded in the structure and strength of neural connections. so u wouldn't even feel different or think there is an other u.
