@coaching.gifted: Highly intelligent individuals are creative in a visionary way. They have the skills and capabilities to create things no one could imagine. This is where they get their intellectual stimulation which makes them thrive. But in order to do that, they need unconditional freedom. When they are being micromanaged, they quickly realize that their skills are not appreciated and they are not going to get the intellectual stimulation they crave. That makes them play small, and everyone ends up losing. I help highly intelligent individuals understand their minds and improve emotional intelligence to reach their full potential. micromanagement comes from forcing someone to do things the way the higher ups want even if its wrong.

My former manager who fired me after 6 weeks wanted me to be a self-starter while he was still micromanaging me… the worst.

I'm so glad I never shrank, I left the jobs instead. I cannot tolerate being constricted.

They think they’re getting you to do more, but what they really do is get you to do the minimum so they leave you alone. I could’ve contributed a lot of creative ideas/work, but if he didn’t think of it first then it’s not the right thing.

good points. it's really great managing smart people, they basically don't need any managing.

And not getting that intellectual stimulation = trying to stay awake during pointless meetings

Lacking those skills makes the manager feel threatened and defensive. I also think it could apply to someone who has more experience than their manager as well.

I once had a job where I’d get in trouble with having creative solutions (a place where the process was more important than results). One of the worst jobs ever.

I’ve literally been told verbatim “me, your boss,” and “now I have to micromanage you.” Like bro… they told you to micromanage not actually tell me that’s what you’re gonna do. Yea I’m always 2 steps ahead

Managers and people in leadership who don't understand that you hire people so that they tell you what to do and not the other way round are the biggest problem in business. An employee is an asset that you extract value out of, not push value out of.

was always able to do my job on a fraction of the work day and then used the rest of the time to learn new skills that I could benefit from in the future. yes corporate training, but other things as well. was a good strategy as I've been able to reinvent my self and change careers several times
