@derekdengg: why do open relationships have millennial gays in such a chokehold? is it a generational gap or a personal preference? i investigate... it's so intriguing because you would think gen z has a more progressive view of love and relationships, but the gen z gays loveee monogamy. i haven't seen any explicit data investigating the generational gap + monogamy but would love to know what y'all think👀 #gay #mlm #gayrelationships #openrelationships

Because Gen Z is more culturally conservative. Millenials experienced an opening of society to queer identities and alternative ways of living. Gen Z grew up while these gains were reversed.

it def is a generational divide. i’ve dated boomers and zoomers—almost all men in this cohort favor monogamy. millennial and gen x men are like 70% more inclined to favor polyamory. deep down i think it has to do with politics (not left vs right, but more so ideological). all of these generations have gone through different “life events” that have sort of shaped their world view. gen x and millennials are a bit more pessimistic. zoomer and boomers are bit more optimistic. idk. but it def is a generational divide.

I’d say they’re just a younger generation that hasn’t had a chance to really experience different relationship dynamics. I remember being younger and only knowing monogamy, but now that I’m in a very secure and happy relationship I can see why open relationships are a thing

If you’re in an open relationship then you are doing it wrong

Most millennials didn’t grow up wanting open relationships. Most of us were raised to want very traditional, monogamous lives. Marriage, stability, the whole thing. Eventually we realized that following those rules didn’t actually guarantee acceptance or happiness. Then we started unpacking purity culture and a lot of rigid, conservative expectations around relationships, sex, and identity. Millennials also came of age during the internet boom. We were exposed to different ways of living, different relationship structures, and people being more open about what actually works for them. So it’s not that millennials suddenly became ‘anti-monogamy.’ It’s that we became willing to question whether one model fits everyone.

In personal experience I see the opposite, but I live in a rural area. Millennials want a monogamous partnership and Gen Z wants to be open or not classify a relationship at all. As a millennial my goal has always been monogamy.

Very interesting tbh, I’m an 89 millennial and I’ve always wanted monogamy and I’m happily in a long term relationship now. I will say my bf is very much what you described as a Gen Z gay.

Personally I’m team monogamy. In my many years (early 40s) I’ve seen many open relationships and none of them have ended well long-term. Not saying they can’t but the percentage doesn’t seem high.

Millennial gay here. Getting married in October. We are not open and most likely never will be. However this couldn’t be a truer analysis of my generation…

My stance on this “debate” is that the end goal will ALWAYS be monogamy. While yes, it’s very easy now whilst being ABLE BODIED!!! Boeing in an open relationship is the better option. But what’s going to happen when you can’t use your looks, money, network and dare I say drugs to hold down a guy? When we do grow older, we do want to settle down with one person and experience those years with relative ease and not some random who only wants use us for our material possessions rather than having a genuine relationship.
