@c5news: Emily graduated from Manchester University seven years ago but feels, like many, that she’s been the victim of mis-selling. What was once seen as a prestigious route to a high-status career, university is now being branded a 'debt trap' because of the rules around repaying student loans - with many graduates left with huge bills. MPs have launched an inquiry into student loans in England over whether the current repayment system is fair. #studentloan #university
We were CHILDREN. why don’t they talk about this more. We were not adults when we made these decisions.

This is misinformation - its a percentage of your earnings like a tax, if you don’t earn, you don’t pay, so you would never ‘struggle with payments to get it done’

I'm on £49k and interest is still accumulating faster than I'm paying it off. It's insane

You weren’t mis-sold lol. It was your loan - it’s up to you to make sure it’s a good decision.

I graduated 10 years ago and I still owe £63,923. It was such a common conversation that you won’t pay it off until you have the means and then after 30 years it’ll be wiped anyway. I don’t remember anyone mentioning the amount of interest etc 😭

I remember them saying “it’s not a real loan, and you won’t notice it because it will be about the same as a phone bill”

I have £123,000 student debt, and have a 15% tax (9% undergrad plus 6% postgrad).

I was surprised that she owed less than she'd initially borrowed and I feel like that says a lot about how f-ed the system is

They had a whole presentation at my Sixth Form, back in 2009, where they flat-out LIED to us saying that we would pay no interest. I believed them, because I was 17 and didn't know any better. Now, my monthly payments don't even cover the interest they told me with big smiles that I wouldn't have.

Daughter borrowed 9k for one year course, she paid back 1k, but still owed 12k. We just payed it off, but even that was difficult, as between receiving balance owed and payment going through, it was going up about 2 quid a day!

I don't even have a great paying job, but if I didn't have a degree I probably wouldn't even have this job. We were heavily mis-sold the idea that university was the route to higher wages.

I remember the immense pressure I felt to go to uni when I was at college from teachers. Friends of mine going and doing random degrees because they didn’t want to disappoint their family. I’m grateful I took an alternative educational route that didn’t financially ruin me but pushing 17 year olds to make life changing decisions is not ok.

currently have my offers from unis and we don’t even really talk about paying it off. It’s just widely accepted that we won’t be able to pay it back, and we’ll be stuck with it until it is written off.
