Michigan, USA – T.J. Wolfgram, a volunteer who served as an outreach captain for newly elected Democratic Senator Abdul El-Sayed's campaign, is facing attention after undercover footage captured him discussing the Muslim Brotherhood and criticizing Americans who questioned the organization's alleged connections to the politician. The footage, published by The Midwesterner on October 26, reportedly shows Wolfgram discussing accusations surrounding El-Sayed's family background and the Muslim Brotherhood. During the conversation, Wolfgram said: “It’s because Americans are idiots." He also stated: “I don’t have any issue with the Muslim Brotherhood. And if I knew more about it, I might support some of what they do.” Wolfgram further discussed the organization's activities and argued that governments should not automatically dictate how other societies live. Following the video's release, Wolfgram confirmed his campaign volunteer role to Newsweek and acknowledged his comments. “I was duped and naive. Too focused on the real work of having sincere conversations. I learned my lesson,” Wolfgram said. He explained that someone had contacted him through the campaign's volunteer Slack channel, claiming to represent a congregation of undecided voters holding weekly discussions about political issues. Newsweek clarified that Wolfgram was a volunteer captain, not a paid campaign employee. The controversy comes after El-Sayed faced repeated political attacks over alleged connections between his family and the Muslim Brotherhood. He has consistently denied having personal or family ties to the organization. The Muslim Brotherhood was founded in Egypt in 1928. In January 2026, the U.S. government designated certain branches in Egypt, Jordan and Lebanon under its terrorism-related authorities. However, the entire organization was not designated as a terrorist group. Meanwhile, El-Sayed defeated Republican Mike Rogers in Michigan's November 3 Senate election, becoming the first Muslim elected to the U.S. Senate, according to the Associated Press.
