@newyorker: Singapore Airlines Flight SQ321 was 37,000 feet above the Irrawaddy River, in Myanmar—three hours from its scheduled landing in Singapore—when the turbulence started. At 7:49:32 A.M., according to the flight’s data recorder, the pilots switched on the “Fasten Seat Belt” sign and told the flight attendants to secure the cabin. Eight seconds later, the plane plummeted. Within five seconds, it had dropped 178 feet—about the height of a 19-story building. “Whoever wasn’t buckled down, they were just launched into the air within the cabin,” one passenger said. “I saw people from across the aisle just going completely horizontal, hitting the ceiling.” “I’m not an especially fearful flier, but I dread turbulence all the same,”  Burkhard Bilger writes, in his latest for the magazine. To report his piece, he tried to find the most turbulent flight possible—and explored why skies are becoming bumpier. Read it at the link in our bio. #turbulence #travel #journalism

I’ve been a flight attendant for 26 years. Turbulence now is WAY worse and more frequent than when I started flying in 1999.

I think the takeaway here for those nervous about flying is that while turbulence can be dangerous, it has never and will never cause an aircraft to crash, and if you keep you seatbelt on all the time while sitting you have very little chance of being injured

turbulence can be dangerous INSIDE the cabin, hence why we ask you to wear your seatbelt so you are held to your seat. you are far more likely to have an accident DRIVING to the airport than you are when you are flying. turbulence does not cause crashes

THIS. IS. WHY. FLIGHT ATTENDANTS TELL YOU TO PUT ON YOUR SEATBELTS WHEN YOU ARE SEATED. If only people listened…

My seatbelt is always on in case we encounter unexpected turbulence. Same as how my seatbelt is always on in a car, even if the drive is going smoothly

Wait a minute! I have seen multiple pilots on TikTok saying no plane has ever crashed due to turbulence. You’re saying it’s responsible for all these “airplane accidents”—does that mean crashes?!?!
