@evanlovett: March 12 marks the 98 years since the largest disaster in Los Angeles History: the collapse of the St. Francis Dam. The Saint Francis Dam was supposed to be William Mulholland’s crowning achievement. Instead, it was one of the largest civil engineering failures of all time. Here is the tragic story. Let’s get into it. ##Mulholland##WilliamMulholland##SaintFrancisdam##lainaminute##losangeles

I did my Master's thesis on this disaster. Go to Santa Paula and see the memorial to the motorcycle cops who saved hundreds of lives.

It’s so sad that his legacy became about this event because his work up to this point is almost the whole reason LA is the city it is today.

There was a telephone operator in Santa Paula that stayed at her post to try to warn residence by telephone that the flood was coming. Her name was Louise Gipe

We learned about this in elementary school. Took a field trip there. That was 42 years ago. Inspired me to be an engineer. Scares me to go to other dams, even 42 years later. Going to Hoover in a couple weeks, (for the hundredth time) and I still get creeped out.

A tragic event. A friend of mine has studied this disaster and hosts a hike up there once a year.

I think Mulholland is basically the one that brought water to Los Angeles with the aqueduct from the Mammoth area. I believe he was a hero up until this happened.

My grandpa's cousin was 9 years old, and remembered waling up that morning to see the debris in her yard. She lived along Vineyard in Oxnard, near Los Angeles Avenue, near Saticoy.

The 1928 collapse of the St. Francis Dam was the primary catalyst for the creation of engineering registration boards in California in 1929.

I worked on all the dams in LA County They all leak. They all move. There are leakage points that are measured at regular intervals and they have expansion joints that are also measured with veneer calipers. I believe it was Cal Tech that would come out with earthquake simulators. (Huge shakers) and measure the joints before and after!! Many safety precautions are exercised regularly for the safety of All!!
