@drritamc: I’m a family doctor in Vancouver. British Columbia, and I saw saw 25 patients in 10 hours today - about 1/3 of that time was spent doing administrative work. Only a portion of which I think is reasonable. Some of the fixes for our primary care crisis need to be done at a region and provincial level. #FamilyDoctorshortage #primarycare
Family medicine looks pretty cozy from afar, thanks for this information Dr

That’s 20m per patient. Not including administrative time. As a retired professional; I’m not sure what you’re complaining of.

25 pt in a 10 hour shift works out to 2.5 ppl an hour. That's nothing

thank you so much for posting this. unfortunately there is so much to a doctor's day which the average person doesn't realize is needing to be done and in turn, requiring time out of your day

I don’t know if you offered me $250,000 to $700,000 a year to start. I would gladly work 14 hours a day.

Yes, change the referral process for sure. But also change the structure: hire a LPN or Nurse Practitioner to do all the preliminary work (filling out medical forms, setting things up, booking more appts, asking for more info etc) - you then review and approve. Have notes in your patients' files about dose changes, so when asked, your nurse practitioner can address it with the pharmacist. Even have your nurse practitioner do things like taking blood pressure, heart rate, weighing patients etc. before they come into your office.

I saw an American Doctor , now in private practice here in Vancouver, and he loves the system here compared to the US system because his day also involves dealing directly with Private insurance, and his struggle with getting paid, and the mountain of paperwork.. glass half full.

I work in a med office and 25 patients a day is definitely on the lower end unfortunately.. ( plastic surgery office and fam doctors ) it’s usually like 6-8 hours with 40 patients lol

Can you really give due dillegence and care to your patients if you are seeing 25 in 7 hours , seems excessive

And wouldn’t it be FANTASTIC if you could access records outside of your health authority? Or even Canada wide? How frustrating

as an MOA I hate the referral process when each specialist has their own form. the emr referral process has all the same info. I usually do all the copy and paste so all my Dr. has to do is sign.

That’s why they pay you the big bucks, most of my visits to a family doctor are about 5 minutes, I’m sure you doctors get paid a healthy salary per visit.
