Guinean President Calls for Unity, Rejects ECOWAS Sanctions as Solution Speaking at the 69th Ordinary Session of the Authority of Heads of State and Government of ECOWAS at the Julius Maada Bio International Conference Center in Lungi, Guinean President Mamady Doumbouya called for greater unity within the sub-region, stressing that there is no room for division and that sanctions are not the solution to political challenges. “There is no room left for any division,” President Doumbouya said, adding that sanctions should be considered only as a last resort rather than the first response to crises. “Our sub-region has too often turned to sanctions as a first instinct when they should have been the last resort,” he stated. The Guinean leader said experience has demonstrated, without doubt or exception, that sanctions do not achieve their intended objectives. Instead, he argued, they inflict suffering on ordinary citizens. “Children in classrooms, women in markets, and men in fields and workshops suffer the most. They deprive hospitals of essential medicines, empty markets of basic necessities, fuel all kinds of trafficking, and simply penalize the sons and daughters of our ancestral land,” he said. President Doumbouya emphasized that issuing communiqués that impoverish people in an attempt to correct the actions of a state undermines the very principles upon which ECOWAS was founded. “A communiqué that impoverishes a people to correct a state moves away from the very spirit that led to the creation of this community,” he noted. He further argued that African traditions do not embrace the exclusion or punishment of people. “Our African traditions do not include the principle of excluding the child, let alone the idea of starving or fighting them,” he said. The Guinean President recalled that the vision of the founding fathers of ECOWAS was never intended to be punitive or repressive, but rather to create a community built on shared prosperity. “The vision held by our community’s founding fathers was never intended to be punitive, nor was it meant to be repressive. Instead, it was the creation of a space dedicated to our shared prosperity, where the free movement of goods, people, and ideas would bring our people together rather than isolate them,” he stated. Calling for a renewed focus on development, President Doumbouya urged ECOWAS leaders to prioritize productive economies, investment, and the welfare of citizens. “That is why I say this with the respect due to this assembly, but also with the firmness that my responsibility as Head of State demands. Let us refocus on the essentials.
