They thought nobody was coming. After rescuing six dogs from that county road, we got a message from a woman who had possibly seen two more earlier in the day. She recognized them from our video and realized they weren’t among the six we’d already found. So at 10 PM, we went back. Number seven was bedded down deep in the woods. If you watch closely, you’ll see him sitting there quietly in the shrubs. We nearly missed him. After getting him safely loaded, we started making one final sweep of the area before leaving. That’s when we found number eight. Or maybe I should say that’s when number eight finally let us find him. We had already walked past him multiple times. He was lying in the grass completely still. No barking. No movement. Nothing. I don’t know how I spotted him. I just happened to catch a glimpse of something furry out of the corner of my eye as we were walking back to the vehicle. When I reached for him, he ran. And honestly, I don’t blame him. These little dogs were the perfect size to become prey. Out there alone at night, surrounded by woods and fields, every instinct they had was probably telling them to stay low, stay quiet, and don’t move. Coyotes don’t have soft touches. Neither do puppy mills. The only humans these dogs have known likely weren’t kind to them. They weren’t loved. They weren’t cared for. They don’t know what a gentle hand feels like. They don’t know that some people stop because they want to help. All they know is fear. So they hid. They laid perfectly still. And they waited. Thankfully, one woman took the time to watch our video and realized two dogs were missing. Because she spoke up, we went back. Several people from the community stayed out there helping us search, and together we got both dogs safely loaded. We walked those dark county roads and fields until after midnight making absolutely sure there weren’t any more left behind. Eight dogs. One county road. And tonight, every single one of them is safe. For the first time in a very long time, they don’t have to survive. They can just be dogs. ❤️ #rescuelife #dogrescue #secondchances #rescue #rescuedog
