CORPUS CHRISTI Corpus Christi, meaning "Body of Christ," is a solemn feast in the Catholic Church that celebrates the Real Presence of Jesus Christ in the Holy Eucharist—His Body, Blood, Soul, and Divinity under the appearance of bread and wine. It is officially known as the Solemnity of the Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ and is observed on the Thursday after Trinity Sunday, though in many places it is celebrated on the following Sunday for pastoral reasons. The feast originated in the 13th century through the visions of St. Juliana of Liège and was instituted by Pope Urban IV in 1264. St. Thomas Aquinas composed its hymns, including the timeless Tantum Ergo and Pange Lingua. This feast publicly proclaims our belief that Jesus is truly present in the Eucharist through the miracle of transubstantiation. During Mass, the bread and wine are transformed into the actual Body and Blood of Christ, fulfilling His words at the Last Supper: "This is my body, this is my blood." One of the most striking features of Corpus Christi is the Eucharistic Procession, where the Blessed Sacrament is carried in a monstrance through the streets. This public act of worship serves as a powerful witness of faith, affirming that Jesus is not confined to our churches but is present in our world. The procession is also an act of blessing for the entire community, an expression of thanksgiving, a moment of reparation, and a sign that the Church is on a journey with Christ at its center. Corpus Christi calls us to deepen our love for the Eucharist, to be more aware of Christ’s presence among us, and to live out that presence in our daily lives. As we adore the Body and Blood of Christ, we commit ourselves to becoming His Body in the world—serving, loving, and witnessing wherever we go.
