I have seen an interesting interpretation of this: Zhang Linghe’s immediate linking of ugly-looking with southeastern looking is actually due to his subconscious hostility toward Song Weilong, who people compared him with a lot. “Southeast Asian Looking” is what people liked to describe Song Weilong due to his high contrast/exotic facial features (aka浓颜). And Zhang definitely knows this cuz he focuses a lot on what netizens talked about. Man’s jealousy is a real thing lol 😆

I think my issue with his apology is that he says it's a misunderstanding rather than a comment born out of ignorance and that he will do better to educate himself and dismantle stereotypes or prejudices he quite clearly has. I dislike this whole it's a misunderstanding, it came out wrong when what he said and the meaning behind it was clear and obvious. It must have hurt his fans from Southeast Asia so much to hear him say that and those feelings should be acknowledged. I don't think he should be cancelled by any means, like you said it's a mistake and we can only hope he learns from it. Admittedly it left a bad taste in my mouth about his character but I don't personally know the guy, this is only a snippet of him I've seen. I enjoy his dramas and wish him success, continued growth and LEARNING! I appreciate you saying to his fans that not everything needs to be defended. He did something wrong full stop.

I'm sick of fans who always defend their idol blindly. Yes I agree with you, celebrities make mistakes too, don't defend his/her mistakes and don't ignore their false just because we are their fans. Let them appologize, let them own their mistake. But it doesn't meant We need to be too quick to cancel them. Forgive but not forget and if they make the same mistake in the future, so we Will know that maybe that's the real character and time to cancel.
