listing a bunch of early milestones is just a way to distract from the fact that the soviets completely lost the actual engineering race once things got complicated. they were great at the initial "space sprint" but they couldn't handle the marathon because their n1 moon rocket kept blowing up while our saturn v had a perfect record. a lot of those soviet "firsts" were just one-way suicide missions or simple probes while we were busy building the first digital flight computers and sustainable life support that actually kept people alive. the ussr only pivoted to robots and venus because they realized they couldn't compete with our tech or our budget to get humans to the moon and back. it doesnt matter if you take the first ten steps of a race if you never actually cross the finish line everyone agreed on. nasa proved we had the better system by building tech that actually lasted for decades instead of just seconds on a planet's surface before melting. at the end of the day they had the head start but we had the actual mastery to turn a dream into a routine reality.
