@curryoclock: I was invited to explore Mawella by @thisisnotahotelsl which is an upmarket guest house, co work and yoga space and a kitchen. I honestly have not seen a beach like Mawella in years. With so much development across Ahangama, Weligama, Midigama and Hiriketiya, it can feel rare to find a stretch of coastline that still feels peaceful, open and deeply local. Discovering Mawella was a true pleasure. We stayed for more than a week because we simply did not want to leave. It was the kind of place where you slow down, rest properly and sink into the rhythm of village life. Our days were filled with simple but unforgettable moments. Fishing with locals, kayaking along the lagoon with @ropewalksl @kayak_rekawa, eating from small village huts and wandering through beautiful temples. We joined cooking workshops with village aunties and learned how to prepare some incredible southern dishes. Mornings began with authentic breakfasts, warm kola kenda for every guest and delicious rice and curry for lunch and dinner. Evenings meant hopper stops, beach hut sunsets and long chats with the kindest people. What made Mawella special for me as a Sri Lankan was the feeling of genuine welcome. Sometimes with the way tourism is changing parts of our coastline, it can feel like locals no longer belong. Here it was the opposite. People stopped their tuk tuks to offer a lift, shared stories and welcomed us without expecting anything in return. This felt like the Sri Lanka I remember growing up with. A coastline full of warmth, simplicity and real hospitality. Finding a small piece of my childhood again in Mawella was incredibly special.
