I roofed houses for 20 something years. And I never, ever did that. I would cut as I went.And most of the time, I didn't run a forty five.I went a three line bon line straight up the roof edge 10 and 1212 and 12 and didn't matter. And when we got done our roofs were spectacular, a lot less cutting than wearing my wrist out. And didn't have a lot to cleanup when we got done lot less waste and a lot quicker

pros use starter strip or rolls not that cut off the back of a shingle that has no adhesive on it. also shingles should over hang drip edge
