@emilyt_therapy: Research on trauma shows that verbal disclosure is not always the easiest entry point for processing. For many survivors, direct eye contact and speaking about traumatic experiences out loud can feel intensely intimate or exposing, and in some moments it can feel almost impossible due to the nervous system’s freeze response. Writing can reduce that barrier. It slows the pace of the interaction, removes the pressure of eye contact, and creates psychological distance from the material being shared. Studies on expressive writing and trauma processing suggest that putting experiences into words on paper can help organize thoughts, regulate emotion, and increase a sense of control over disclosure, which is why writing back and forth in session can sometimes open communication when speaking feels too overwhelming. ——————————————————— #complextrauma #cptsd #cptsdrecovery #traumahealing #therapytiktok

What’s your thoughts when one knows the therapists for a while and still struggle to verbalise certain things?

God, you’re such a good therapist. I wish I had a therapist like this, cause like you said, it’s really hard to verbally talk about these things. And then they treat me like I’m stubborn for feeling uncomfortable disclosing details on the spot and preferring handwritten disclosures

I usually take a long time to look at my new therapists or psychiatrists. I thought it was just me. I have a severe case of C-PTSD, and it’s much better after years of interventions. But even still I can’t usually look at them for the first few months. Just too much.

i email my therapist before a session if there’s something i want her to know but i’m worried i won’t be verbal and that allows her to understand why im coming in activated and support me. or I email her after a session if there’s something going on for me that I couldn’t get out in the session. i get more impatient and frustrated with myself when I can’t say the words, but she’s patient and says we have all the time, even if it doesn’t happen this week and not rushing to disclosure has been a really healing part of the work

I have always wrote my thoughts. My therapist now just asks me if I want a clipboard when I get stuck. And then we usually get to a point where I can talk again after a few back and forths with the paper

As a patient, I send my therapist emails to talk about hard things because I struggle to say them out loud. I cant say things because its too complicated. So she reads my emails prior to session and it gives her all the info before we talk about it so I don't have to say any of the hard stuff!

I sometimes can't speak and writing is the only way I can communicate. However, my therapist insists that I need to verbalize. It's frustrating!

This is me!! I finally (after 6-7 months) opened up over email. Now in sessions I can't make eye contact but email between sessions. My therapist also makes sure our chairs are facing the same way so they aren't looking at me.

I just had this conversation with my therapist as I am autistic and have a lot of trauma and verbal shutdowns have been getting in the way of my treatment so we are starting to incorporate my new AAC device into our sessions and my therapist has been so supportive of this!

this is awesome. my therapist and I do this. when a memory comes up I usually can't speak, so I write and she writes back. eye contact is hard for me. I wasn't allowed to look my abuser in the eyes. so it's hard to maintain eye contact for me. so writing is definitely easier. love this. keep being amazing.

I’ve ended up in a verbal shutdown during session or gone into session while in one. She’s always adjusted to how I’ve showed up and it’s been okay and that’s been really nice. I now have a whiteboard in her office that I can use if I want/need it. There have also been times that I had a bunch typed out in a note on my phone and she’s read that. Those have been where some of the things that have come up and felt scariest to tell her have been told at least first. Not having the requirement to verbally communicate has been so helpful

I literally text my therapist when I’m in front of her bc sometimes it’s hard for me to talk about certain things. She’ll respond verbally, but I can’t about a certain subject so I text. I’m grateful she does this with me 🤷🏻‍♀️

I email my therapist just about everyday I have therapy. I actually have a draft email in the days between sessions that I just add to. This not only allows me to get things off of my mind, let her know what is going on in my life, what I need/want to talk about but also holds me accountable. It is VERY helpful. I am able to communicate in writing a lot easier than verbally.

when I was younger I had a really hard time speaking and looking my counselor in the eye because of this exact reasoning and she’d let me use a whiteboard to communicate while she would verbally communicate and it was honestly the best thing someone’s done to help me out. Honestly really surprised this isn’t a known strategy that’s widely implemented !
