Farage, who was leading the UK Independence Party, had stepped out of his car in the city center to support the party’s East Midlands candidates ahead of the 2014 European Parliament election. As he approached the crowd, an egg struck him in the face. The attacker, Frederick Glenister, 29, was holding a placard that read: “UKIP… sad, scared, old men.” Police quickly detained him at the scene. Glenister, who had traveled from Brighton to stage the protest, later pleaded guilty to assault. He was sentenced to 150 hours of community service, and ordered to pay £200 in costs plus a £60 victim surcharge.
