@curtisagardner: If you’re a technician, you’ve probably seen this happen before… Production slows down, traffic drops, and the solution becomes hiring more technicians. But when the shop already has slow periods, adding more technicians can often lower morale for the team that’s already there. Fewer cars per technician usually means less opportunity for everyone. Sometimes the bigger opportunity is improving the systems inside the shop: Structuring workflow, Increasing communication, Intentional organization, and diagnostic efficiency. When technicians are supported with strong processes and efficient systems, the entire service department becomes stronger.

Yep. Overwhelmed writers who can't get approvals/declines/more info in a timely manner, inexperienced parts advisors, parts availability, parking lot jam packed (Sometimes have to move 3 cars to get to 1)....Not to mention overall decline of build/component quality across the board. Everyone makes JUNK....Oh and extended warranty on everything, and recalls, recalls, recalls...

Techs not having two stalls, techs not able to do upsells because Adviosr’s are scared to ask for more time and or we don’t have enough time to do them and have to give it up

Production doesn’t increase if customer count doesn’t increase. More techs doesn’t bring more work. You can’t produce more as a tech or a shop if techs are always 10 deep on the waiting for work list.

If you're not turning work around, I can almost guarantee you that you have parts fill rate or parts staffing issues.

we have two stalls per tech and I strongly believe that plays a massive role in our techs efficiency and overall job satisfaction - our efficiency per bay is pretty close to 100% and the small deficit isn’t the techs fault.

Paul Gardner :
There is a difference between shop efficiency and tech efficiency. One tech in each bay may increase shop efficiency but will not help tech efficiency. The ability to rate down and wait for SA or Aftermarket warr. and move on to the next job. No let’s put it back together and push it outside then when the inspector comes we can do the tare down again!

I'm working on leaving where I am because of the efficiency of the upfront staff. they don't communicate with each other. they don't communicate with customers. they don't communicate with us. they aren't writing tickets properly leaving stuff off of tickets. it's hard to do a pentastar oil cooler assembly when they forget the oil change and coolant.

First off there’s certain metrics you have to hit for instance the amount of hours turned versus the amount of hours that one is present for the other thing is the amount of work flow coming into your shop. Every tech is separated by their own skill limit. And because of this, we all have limitations that being said if you have a technician and they’re turning 400 hours a week, Poesta speaking of of course, and they’re still not getting enough to work in the door to make the dealership satisfied or shop satisfied then yes you need more technicians but on the same hand if you have a technician that is there For 40 hours a week and they’re only turning 20 30 10 whatever hours below that then you have a problem where work isn’t allocated appropriately and something is missing from the the ticket so that the technician can get paid for that. I don’t ask for much I just ask for people to be fair with me. I don’t expect to make a lot of money where I’m at, but I do expect to be treated and to be paid fairly. Enough I’m here for 40 hours and I’m spending 30 hours to diagnose a problem and I’m leaking paid 10 hours to work on it. We have some issues.
