When the kids were younger we did “family dollars” every chore, task, or help earned a specific “family dollar” amount, but they also had to pay for “everything” they needed/used around the house, ie $1 for meals/ snacks, you’re out of $$?? Here’s a chore or task that will earn you the $$, video games, tv, etc. it helped them learn about working for the money to pay the real world bills, and no, they never went hungry and absolutely LOVED doing family dollars, at the end of the week they could cash in for real money, or save it for say more time on a video game or something.

what if you just can't afford to pay them for chores and helping out. whats a good alternative to still keep that trust that they are doing the right thing when they get it done without asking

I'll say that I never got a proper allowance, but I was also rarely denied anything reasonable that I asked for. Big things had to wait for Christmas or my birthday, but basic stuff like $20 to go out with friends was almost always given.

My dad used to get me & my siblings up at 8am sometimes on weekends years ago when we were much younger & make us have breakfast & I remember vividly one day I cried because it was early & I didn’t wanna be up (considering I did school every other days of the week & had homework on evenings), & he said ‘I let you have a lie in yesterday’ like sorry you LET me?? Sorry do I need your permission to sleep in on the only 2 days I don’t have to be up at 7am now?? Do I not deserve my needed rest?

I believe sleep is so important and school is so stressful now a days. I do expect chores handled but on the weekends...it's on Thier time! if he sleeps till 8 am or noon. his body clock is what I listen to

Not everyone needs to get up at 6 am. The world doesn't stop at 6 pm, some people need to keep the world going when you sit down in the sofa. I'm in mid 30s and I have stopped letting people shame me for sleeping til later in the morning because I sleep exactly the same amount of hours, but I don't sit down in the sofa

I always let my kids sleep in on the weekends when they don’t have school. And if I was ever grounded, my mom would still let me go to Prom and stuff like that because it only happens a few times

My kids don’t really get allowance but they always get money for things they need (sporting events, dances, sleepovers, or just going to the store with friends). Also, I don’t reinforce a bed time or what time they have to get up on their days off from school. They have plenty of time to do that when they’re adults
